Who told you?
History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. Â Eccl 3:19 (NLT)
There have been times I have studied themes or particular chapters of the Bible but what I really enjoy the most is just reading through large sections of scripture. With that in mind several thoughts have come to me regarding our election.  It can be summed up in the scripture above.  The first thought I had was of the incident in the Garden of Eden.  After having been deceived by the serpent we find this passage:
“When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees.  Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?â€
He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.â€
And then this question, which is key,  “Who told you that you were naked?†the Lord God asked.  While Adam never really answers this question it is a question that I like to ask myself about a lot of things.  “Who told you…â€
I’ve always been curious about, well, just about everything.  So I rarely assume anything. I like to test it out myself.  So this is what I tested, because I hear it all the time.
“He isn’t fit to serve as President.†  Â
Who told you…
There was a king of Israel. Â He saw a women and sent his officials to find out more about her. Â Turns out she was married but her husband was away. Â He had them bring her to him and he slept with her. Â We have no indication this was consensual. Â As a result she became pregnant. The king had her husband sent to a dangerous area of battle. Â He instructed his general to move the man to the battle front and then when things got intense to pull the other men back, essentially leaving him behind to die at the hands of the enemy. Â The woman’s husband died. Â Later we see that, after a time of mourning for her lost husband, the King brings her to the palace and makes her his wife. Â There is no indication that she knew that this same king had her husband murdered. Â Surely this king was not fit to be a leader right? Â Wrong. Â
When God sent his prophet to confront the king he told him he would suffer strife in his kingdom and family.  What he didn’t tell him was that he was unfit to serve and remove his crown.  Something he could have easily done.  He served until his death from old age. Later, we find out the final verdict, in God’s eyes, regarding King David; just as we do with the following man who lived before King David.
The first recorded words we have from this man is when he comes to his parents and tells them. “I  saw a woman, get her for me.†He later went with his parents, talked with her (for the first time) and then married her. He was a visual person who pursued what was pleasing to his eyes.  He left her over a dispute with her family only to return a year later and in another rash act, created a situation that led to the death of his both her and her father.  He eventually became the Judge, or leader, of his nation. His immaturity lead him to kill 30 men for their clothes, to fulfill a bet he made in a boastful moment.  Boasting was his thing. Later, in another fit of anger he kills 1,000 men using the jawbone of a donkey.  After announcing that he had written a poem he read it aloud and then, the bible tells us  “When he finished his boasting, he threw away the jawbone; and the place was named Jawbone Hill.† A self-named memorial memorial to his accomplishment. Â
Time goes on and his lack of discretion leads him to venture into the heart of enemy territory. Â The place where those who hated hime would like nothing better than to kill the leader of his people. Â Why? To visit a prostitute. Â Unfit right?
Well, not according to the new testament book of Hebrews.  We find both David and Samson mentioned as inductees into the what is commonly known as the Hero’s of Faith.
Hebrew chapter 13: “And what more can I say? Time is too short for me to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets, who by faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the raging of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, gained strength after being weak, became mighty in battle, and put foreign armies to flight.
…
“All these were approved through their faith… (Hebrews 11:39a)
Unfit to serve as the leader of a great county? Â Who told you?

This is just food for thought.  It was not my goal to lobby for any particular candidate.  Only to inspire you to challenge the things your are told by simply asking yourself “Who told you† It’s an important question.
