Why do I have to…

by Ted Werth on December 23, 2011

The sister of a thousand faces

I suspect a lot of you are like me. You start your day thinking “Let’s see, today I have to….”

I’ve been trying another approach lately. Whenever I catch myself thinking that I have to do something, I rephrase it and I say “I get to…”

A little thing. But it can put a whole new perspective on anything.

I don’t have to go to work. I get to go to work. It is a blessing on many levels. The obvious one is that it brings an income. But I would go crazy if I wasn’t able to do something productive. Many people would love to have your job. Really, they would. And while co-workers can be irritating and frustrating I don’t have to put up with them. I get to smile and and say something pleasant. Who knows, it may bless them.

So, when I pay the ever increasing heating bill I tell myself I get to pay the heating bill. It means that I’m blessed to be able to live in a warm house.

Change a diaper? You are blessed with a child who thinks the world of you.

Fill the gas tank? You are blessed that you have transportation that only a small percentage of the world enjoys.

Tired of shopping, baking and preparing dinner for Christmas? You have a family who gets to be with you and who will be blessed by your efforts, even if it isn’t always apparent.

Know someone who doesn’t have family to share Christmas with? You get to invite them to share with your family, and in the process make them a temporary member.

Can’t handle the grumpy store clerk? You get the opportunity to smile, be pleasant and just maybe be one of the small bright spots in their day.

Many years ago while driving home from work a yellow jacket entered my car and stung me on the hand. The next day my hand started swelling. I debated whether I needed to see a doctor. Part of my thought process was having to pay for the visit when we didn’t have a lot of extra money laying around. As my hand continued to swell, I called and made an appointment for later that day.

My doctor examined my hand and after hearing my story told me I had a staff infection. Yellow jackets don’t always hang out in the most sanitary places. Before mentioning that I needed some antibiotics he casually mentioned that fifty years ago this was the kind of thing people died from.

What!

Yes, it true, we take antibiotics for granted now. My perspective changed quickly. I didn’t have to pay for a doctor visit and medicine. I got to pay a long forgotten amount for the best medical care and medicine available.

So, what is it that you get to do today? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Farewell to the Lightbulb

by Ted Werth on December 7, 2011

Daylight Bulb

The light bulb has been with us for a very long time. Thomas Edison’s invention literally changed the world. No longer did people have to depend on dim and dangerous oil lamps or candles to light their house. If you have suffered through a power outage you know what it is like to sit is a dark dim room lit up by a few candles.

Unfortunately, in their infinite wisdom Congress has started the process of dimming Thomas Edison’s light bulb once and for all. Starting January 1st, manufactures will no longer be allowed to produce the standard 100 watt light bulb. Other light bulbs will follow.

Rather we are committed to a future of using compact florescent bulbs. More expensive, slow to light up and, according to this EPA data sheet, dangerous to your health should you break one. Turns out they have to use mercury inside these things.

All in the name of save the earth from global warming. I have a hard time comprehending that people really believe that swapping out a light bulb is going to have any effect on the world climate. But that comes from someone who has wandered through hundreds of miles of wilderness. Once you have done that your understand the vastness of God’s creation and the smallness of man.

In any case, as you may or may not know, I love a good parody and this one by Remy Munasifi is a classic take off on the song “I’ll be missing you” performed originally by P. Diddy (known as Puff Daddy at the time) about the sudden loss of a close friend.

Enjoy. Oh, you might want to stock up on those incandescent light bulbs while you have chance.

My favorite line from this video has to do with an Easy Bake Oven. What’s your favorite line from the video? Drop a comment below.

August 11, 2011

What if? We have all had that thought before. I recently had that thought cross my mind while attending two Teen Reach Adventure Camps. The housing market has been though a lot the last couple of years and most of it has been negative. There is constant news about new foreclosures and 98% of those who know what a short sale is had no idea 3 years ago. Personally I’ve watched the value of my house drop about 25%. [...]
